Boy! Do We Have Used Books!

Thanks to our wonderful community’s generosity, we are running out of shelf space in our used book department!

People are bringing in books in great condition on every conceivable topic from arts & crafts and cooking to westerns and ‘sensual romances’!  We have literary classics, christian romance, tons of kids books — both picture and chapter books. We have probably everthing that popular authors like Janet Evanovich, Luanne Rice, and Stephen King have ever written!  But we also have many selections from the lesser known authors who are just waiting to be discovered.

And to make it even better, don’t forget that we donate 10% of our Used Book proceeds to charity each month.  January’s recipient will be the Marion County Habitat for Humanity, and in February, we will be giving to the Red Rock Area Community Action!

The First Readers Anonymous Bookclub Meeting was a Success

It was a cold January evening in Iowa, and about a dozen brave souls made their way to The Next Chapter for the first meeting of the Readers Anonymous Bookclub.  Attendees included high school students and senior citizens, men and women, long-time locals from around Marion County, as well as  newcomers to our community.

Our plan was to let people divide up into genre-specific groups (the Romance readers, the History buffs, etc.) and then facilitate those groups’ future meetings.  But, as often happens, people took matters into their own hands, in this case with very happy consequences!

We spent the evening engaged in a lively gathering of book-lovers sharing their excitement and love of books, of favorite authors, and of preferred genres.  Readers offered commentary on style and plot, and more than one person was heard to comment that they might break out of their usual genre to read something really different for a change.

The group unanimously and enthusiastically agreed to make this a regular event, and signed up on an email list.  And so, here’s the official announcement.  The Readers Anonymous Bookclub will meet each month on the last Thursday at 6 pm here at The Next Chapter.

Please feel free to post your comments and suggestions for the group here, and many thanks to all of you who made it!  For you who have yet to come, we welcome you!

Come see the Quilt!

We have a gorgeous white and blue quilt displayed in our front window! It is handmade by Father Ernie Braida, and is being raffled off as part of the big benefit for Bob Caughey and his family.  Raffle tickets are $1 each or $5 for 6.

We also have tickets ($5 each) for the benefit event itself, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31st, starting at 4 pm at Dyer Hudson Hall.  Don’t miss this fun event featuring a chili supper, entertainment and a silent auction with TONS of great items!

Bob, his wife Angela, and their high-school aged twins are life-long residents of Knoxville, and Bob is currently battling cancer.
